Acids & Base Stoichiometry

The Glossary

Acid-Base Stoichiometry is the calculation of measurable relationships between acids and bases in a balanced equation.

Acid-Base Reaction: When an acid reacts with a base, two products are formed: water and a salt.

Arrhenius Acid: Produces H+ in solution

Arrhenius Base: Produces OH- in solution

Brønsted-Lowry Acid: A proton donor

Brønsted-Lowry Base: A proton acceptor

Buffer solution: a solution that resists a change in its pH

Lewis Acid: An electron-pair acceptor

Lewis Base: An electron-pair donor

pH: the antilog of the concentration of H+ in

mol/L

pOH: the antilog of the concentration of OH - in mol/L

phenolphthalein: A pH indicator. colorless when pH < 8.2, and pink when pH >10.0

salts: Ionic solids
