-Bonds form when they are reaching their lowest possible energy (the lower the energy, the more stable it is). -A collection of atoms are more stable than the separate atoms. Ex: 1652 kJ is released when breaking methane. This takes less energy to break than to break 1 mole of carbon atom and 4 moles of hydrogen atoms, therefore methane is more stable than the separated atoms. Overview of a Model - We need to understand the forces that bind atoms together to understand reactions. - Models are made by man and often wrong. - Scientists usually patch up the models by adding more detail to fix any flaws. |
