Science and technology are a field of study that has become one of the most dominant fields in education. It is one of the important fields affecting society. Education and technology are closely linked; they are intimately connected as both are intertwined. The relationship between science and technology in education and culture is profound as many disciplines rely on scientific research and development results.

Science and technology are a field of study that encompasses all areas of physical sciences like astronomy, earth sciences, medical science, including genetics, cell and molecular biology; engineering, including computer sciences, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, aerospace science, and mathematics. In broad terms, science and technology studies look into the natural world, investigate how different organisms interact, how humans use technology to their advantage, study the origins of technology, analyze current technology, predict future technologies, and evaluate historical examples of technology. Within this broad spectrum, various subdisciplines include computer sciences, biomedical engineering, environmental science, engineering, genetics, horticulture, physics, and physiology. Within each subfield, some have much more diverse studies and application than others.

Science and tech studies generally focus on human interests such as studying the earth, the universe, energy, and nature. These areas have the most diverse curriculum sets, requiring vastly different skill sets and subject matter mastery. An excellent example of a science major’s discipline would be biology, specifically molecular biology, which requires a solid grasp of math, physics, chemistry, and physiology. A bachelor’s degree in science and technology with a minor in applied science will enable one to enter research, teaching, and industry. A bachelor’s degree in applied science and technology will allow one to specialize or complete a master’s degree in the same field for those already in the scientific research and development field.

The breadth of science and technology studies is staggering. Areas covered encompass everything from space flight and planetary science to cell biology and anthropology. Students need to understand that not all science and technology professionals are researchers. Many serve as consultants, policy experts, educators, and nonprofit advocates. Some individuals may choose to pursue careers in the research and development field, while others opt for environmental science and natural resource management.

As science and technology advances, the diversity of job outlook continues to increase as well. Job opportunities in the scientific and business fields are expected to grow at an increasingly rapid rate. There will likely be more jobs in the human resources field and employment in the information technology field. Even in traditionally “blue-collar” industries, there is an increasing need for science and technology workers. While technology continues its expansion, society will need to continue to support its growth as well. For this reason, science and technology-related activities will continue to be critical throughout today and the future.

Graduates with degrees in science and technology studies are well-positioned for tomorrow’s society. Graduates in the science and engineering field are more likely to be eligible for higher paid positions, which can help them lead more successful lives. With increased job opportunities and a diverse range of career choices, graduates of today’s graduate schools should pursue careers in fields related to human resources, environmental science and technology, information technology, applied science and math, and the physical sciences. Individuals who earn a bachelor’s degree in science and technology studies will be ready to hit the ground running when the jobs are available.
